Departing Family Values

Joe Coach’s intimate relationship with his assistant began a year before the scandalous details became public and cost him his job. Not only did he lose his coaching job, but the affair also ended his 30-year marriage. When documents were uncovered, they revealed more than 6,000 text messages between the couple. The relationship included more than $30,000 in gifts and a bonus to his mistress, who was half his age.
1 Corinthians 7 – Moral Clarity
While this is a fictional account that depicts several real events, it reflects a problem not only in sports but throughout our modern culture. Paul used the first six chapters of 1 Corinthians to address improper conduct within the church; he now begins to address the church’s questions about life and Christian practice. He teaches them to be faithful in marriage while also fully giving themselves to Jesus for the advancement of His gospel, regardless of marital status.
Too many Christians today call it quits on everything, including marriage. It was once rare to read a headline about a coach or athlete cheating on his or her spouse. Not so much anymore. Chapter 7 provides crucial passages on marriage, separation, divorce, and remarriage. Paul urges them to think biblically about each of these issues.
The Kingdom Coach and Athlete are committed to their relationships, including their marriages, if applicable. They rely on the Bible to renew their minds and change their attitudes, enabling them to glorify God in all their relationships.
Bible Memory Verse – “Or do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore, glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (LSB)
