WE TRAIN COACHES AND ATHLETES TO COMPETE BIBLICALLY

Mutual Edification

Without a coach who understood the need for order, the Chicago Bulls of the 90s could easily have fallen into chaos with flamboyant players like Dennis Rodman and demanding players like Michael Jordan. Coach Phil Jackson built a culture of respect and turned these players into championship teams by helping his team avoid division and chaos. His players had radically different demographic profiles, personalities, and interests. Jackson was still able to turn them into a high-performing unit.

1 Corinthians 14 – Disciplined Unity

Paul closes his instruction on corporate worship by confronting a similar problem in Corinth. Spiritual gifts were meant to build up the church, but instead, they had become tools for self-promotion. In chapter 14, Paul specifically addresses the misuse of prophecy and the practice of speaking in tongues. Some believers wrongly assumed that certain gifts elevated their spiritual status. Rather than strengthening the body, their pride created confusion and disorder during worship gatherings.

Paul’s challenge was not to suppress spiritual gifts but to regulate them. Gifts must operate within God’s design. Worship that is chaotic does not honor the God of peace. Order in the church does not stifle the Spirit; it reflects His character. When exercised properly, spiritual gifts serve others, promote understanding, and exalt Christ. Just as Jackson unified strong personalities under a disciplined structure, Paul calls the church to disciplined unity. Orderly worship glorifies God and strengthens the entire body.

The Kingdom Coach and Athlete understand all things, including worship, must be done for the mutual edification of the body and team. They help their team understand the principle of mutual edification—each person bringing something that benefits the whole team.
