Departing Family Values
Joe Coach’s intimate relationship with his assistant began a year before the scandalous details became public and cost him his job. Not only did he lose his coaching job, but the affair also ended his 30-year-old marriage to his wife. When documents were uncovered, they showed more than 6,000 text messages between the couple. The relationship included more than $30,000 in gifts and a bonus to his mistress, who was half his age.
1 Corinthians 7 – Think Biblically
While this is a fictitious account that depicts several actual events, it represents a problem not only in sports but everywhere in our modern culture. Paul used the first six chapters of 1 Corinthians to respond to improper conduct within the church; he now begins to answer questions the church has about life and Christian practice. He teaches them to be faithful in marriage but also to entirely give themselves to Jesus for the advancement of His gospel regardless of marital status.
Too many Christians today call it quits on everything, including marriage. It was once rare to read a headline about a coach or athlete cheating on his or her spouse. Not so much now. Chapter 7 provides crucial passages on issues of marriage, separation, divorce, and remarriage. Paul points them to think biblically about each of these issues.
The Kingdom Coach and Athlete are committed to relationships, including their marriages, if applicable. They depend on the Bible to renew their minds and change their attitudes to glorify God in all their relationships.
