A Bold Prediction

Paul “Bear” Bryant loved football and coaching football. He often said he’d “croak in a week” if he ever quit coaching. The Bear nearly proved prophetic when he died only one month after retiring from the University of Alabama!
Matthew 16 – True Mission
Jesus knew He had six months before giving His life for mankind’s salvation in chapter 16. Since the disciples believed Him to be the Son of God, they could be expected to understand His prophecy that He would suffer and die before He returns in glory. So, He spoke boldly, openly, plainly, and without fear of His coming crucifixion, dashing all hopes of an immediate earthly kingdom. He revealed that it would be at the hands of the elders (influential Jewish lay leaders), chief priests (Sadducees, including some former high priests), and teachers of the law (scribes and Pharisees) that He would suffer. And Jesus was more accurate than Bear Bryant!
As usual, Peter spoke up first. “Never, Lord,” he protests. A moment after God used him to declare Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Peter was influenced by Satan! He failed to recognize the suffering of the Messiah, as predicted in Isaiah 53. He also failed to understand Jesus’ mission of redemption.
The Kingdom Coach and Athlete follow Jesus’ example by denying themselves. They turn away from their idolatry and self-centeredness to live according to His will.
Bible Memory Verse – “Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’” Matthew 19:21 (LSB)
