Professional elite athletes and coaches earn more than ever thanks to soaring TV contracts and advertising endorsement deals. In fact, it took at least $25 million in 2019 to make the top 100 on the highest-paid athletes list.

It’s easy to think only the richest in sports or society might have a problem with wealth. James closes his letter with practical advice for all of us, not just the rich. It’s important to remember that God’s concern is not money itself. Instead, the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Money can be a tool for good or harm, depending on our hearts and motives.

James 5 – Temporary Treasure

James makes the point that wealth is temporary and that judgment and eternity are ahead. To pursue wealth and neglect seeking God or to trust in wealth as the solution to your problems is foolishness. Jesus pointed this out when he said, “And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails, they may receive you into the eternal dwellings” (Luke 16:9).

The Bible commands us to provide for our families and their needs, but condemns hoarding our money and possessions when they could be used to further the Lord’s work or help others. God’s blessing is often best seen in how we give to others rather than in what we keep for ourselves.

The Kingdom Coach and Athlete maintain a healthy attitude toward their riches, rooted in a humble heart. They know that God blessed them so they can bless others. They are careful not to use money in an ungodly manner but to be faithful.
