WE TRAIN COACHES AND ATHLETES TO COMPETE BIBLICALLY

Sports Idolatry

Throughout my years of playing competitive sports and coaching, I noticed one thing that was consistently present. Whether it was baseball, basketball, or football, I saw many athletes and their parents who worshipped sports.

Amos 1:1;9 – Prophet’s Warning

Nothing was more important—not family, friends, or God. There is only One worthy of worship, and that is God. Any sport or thing that comes before Him serves as an idol. Scripture has a lot to say about idolatry, and it is never approved by God. Our zeal for the things of this world should never surpass the love and devotion we give to the Lord. Why are idols dangerous? Here’s John Piper’s answer: “Namely, the wrath of God is coming upon idolatry. Nothing is more dangerous than the wrath of an omnipotent, all-righteous God.”

Each of the Old Testament prophets had a specific focus for their ministry. Amos’ purpose was concentrated on the widespread idolatry in the Israelite community. He understood the threat idolatry had become, as it led God’s people astray. God’s judgment awaits any nation that abandons His teachings and all He has done for them.

Amos was a sheep breeder by trade rather than a prophet. However, God used him and his courageous and contagious faith to bring the people a message of judgment against their sins. Although he could not get the people to listen, they had been warned and had no one but themselves to blame when they faced God’s judgment.

The Kingdom Coach and Athlete are true to their word and will not break their promises to others or God. They refuse to abandon what they have been taught in God’s Word, which is to serve the Creator rather than the creation.

Bible Memory Verse – “But as for me, I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to Yahweh.” Jonah 2:9 (LSB)
