WE TRAIN COACHES AND ATHLETES TO COMPETE BIBLICALLY

Teachable Believers

I coached boys’ basketball before coaching girls in high school. I was often asked by other coaches which group I preferred to coach. Anyone who has coached both boys and girls would quickly acknowledge that coaching the two groups is different.

For me, one difference was teachability. My boys often took the approach, “Been there, done that.” They were less willing to listen and learn new offenses or defenses. Even worse, when they were asked to move to a different position or change their shot, they often became very stubborn. Most of the girls were more willing and open to any necessary changes. That was my experience.

I have also found that many Christians, who grow up in the church, struggle with teachability. This is especially true for many Christian school students. Even those believers who might have once memorized Scripture or participated in a discipleship group will often become bored with God’s Word.

1 Corinthians 2 – Growing Discernment

Paul is clear in 1 Corinthians 2 that Scripture was written as God’s revelation of His revealed mystery. It’s important not to lose sight of the fact that Scripture is not just human words but words “taught by the Spirit” (2:13). We can never completely understand or comprehend all of His Word, but we should always be maturing in our understanding of His Word. This is not the case for the unbeliever who rejects the Word, for it is folly to them (2:14).

The Kingdom Coach and Athlete focus their thoughts on Scripture through study and meditation. Meditation is an active thought process where the Kingdom Coach and Athlete studies the Word, praying over it and asking God to give them understanding by the Spirit, who has promised to lead us “into all truth” (John 16:13). This will cause spiritual growth and maturing in the things of God as we are taught by His Holy Spirit.

Bible Memory Verse – “Now I urge you, brothers, to keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and stumblings contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them.” Romans 16:17 (LSB)
