A Bold Prediction
Paul “Bear” Bryant loved football and coaching football. He often said he’d “croak in a week” if he ever quit coaching. The Bear nearly proved prophetic when he died only one month after retiring from the University of Alabama!
Matthew 16 – The Most Accurate Prediction
Jesus knew He had six months before He gave His life for the salvation of mankind in chapter 16. Since the disciples believed Him to be the Son of God, they could be expected to handle His prophecy that He would suffer and die before He comes in glory. So, He spoke boldly, openly, plainly, and without fear of His coming crucifixion, extinguishing all hopes of an immediate earthly kingdom. He revealed it would be at the hands of the elders (influential Jewish lay leaders), chief priests (Sadducees, including some former high priests), and teachers of the law (scribes and Pharisees) that He would suffer. And He was more accurate than Bear Bryant!
As usual, Peter spoke up first. “Never, Lord,” he protests. A moment after being used by God to declare Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Peter was used by Satan! He failed to recognize the suffering of the Messiah, as predicted in Isaiah 53. He failed to understand Jesus’ mission of redeeming the souls of all who believe in Him. He saw things from man’s viewpoint and not God’s perspective.
The Kingdom Coach and Athlete follow the example of Jesus by denying self. They turn from their idolatry and self-centeredness and live for His will.
