Beating Temptation
I have never met a coach or athlete who wasn’t tempted to bend the rules or unfairly scream at an official. The profession of coaching is not so different from being a politician or a religious leader. Because the responsibilities are so public, there is always a crowd critiquing every move. That seems to make the temptation even more powerful.
Even Jesus was not immune, as He was “tempted in every way, just as we are” (Hebrews 4:15).
Luke 4 – Live by the Spirit
If you have committed to Christ, you already have what it takes to resist temptation in coaching. As Paul told the Galatians, “Live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature” (Galatians 5:16).
Every coach looks for ways to place their best defense on the field or court. The Word of God has always been the best defense against Satan’s temptations. Just as you prepare your team with the best possible scouting report, the better you know His Word, the easier it will be to claim victory over your daily struggles. (Psalm 119:11)
When you are weak, get ready for a major battle! You can count on an attack whether you hang around people who weaken your resolve or dwell on negative thoughts. The remedy is to “be strong in the Lord” (Ephesians 6:10). Read and memorize the Bible. Jesus beat the tempter with the Word of God.
The Kingdom Coach & Athletes learn how to beat the tempter by studying and applying the lessons from Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness.
Journaling helps you understand and respond to the Bible. As you journal, use the acronym HEAR to Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond to what you have read in the reading plan.
Bible Memory Verse – A student is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. Luke 6:40 LSB
