WE TRAIN COACHES AND ATHLETES TO COMPETE BIBLICALLY

Breaching the Barrier

Branch Rickey helped Don McClanen launch the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Rickey was clear that sports were not the most important thing in his life, “Jesus is not a myth,” Rickey said. “He’s not a fraud. He’s not a plausible but illogical philosopher. He’s the light of the world.”

Rickey is best known for being the general manager and president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he broke the long-standing race barrier in 1945. He signed Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the major leagues. His determination to do something about prejudice in baseball began when he was managing a team where a black player was not allowed to stay at a hotel with the team. Rickey got him into the hotel for the night, but he never forgot the incident and later said, “I may not be able to do something about racism in every field, but I can sure do something about it in baseball.”

Baseball isn’t the only sport or place in society that is afflicted by prejudice. In some cases, the bigotry is against certain colors of skin, specific nationalities, and different cultures.

Acts 10 – All People Matter to God

Much of Acts 2-12 focuses on Peter’s ministry. Through his efforts, he shows people that the gospel applies to the whole world, not just the Jews.

The lesson from Acts 10 for Christians is that all people matter to God. He wants all people to hear the gospel and experience the salvation He offers through belief in His Son, Jesus.

The Kingdom Coach and Athlete set aside their pride and accept responsibility for their own prejudice and failures. They face the sin of bigotry and choose to fight through it and do what is right.

Bible Memory Verse – So Ananias departed and entered the house. And he laid his hands on him and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord sent me—that is Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming—so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 9:17 (LSB)
