WE TRAIN COACHES AND ATHLETES TO COMPETE BIBLICALLY

Confronting a Giant

At just eight years old, he stood an impressive 6-foot-1. By sixth grade, he was nearing 7 feet tall. Now, as an incoming college freshman, he measures an astonishing 7-foot-9, making him the tallest college basketball player in history. Once recognized as the tallest teenager in the world, Olivier Rioux is now proudly listed on the University of Florida’s men’s basketball roster after committing to the Gators last fall.

In a Guinness interview at 16, the Canadian shared that he enjoys being noticed and interacting with others due to his height. He mentioned that his elevated perspective provides him with an advantage during games.

I can hardly imagine what it would be like to face a giant like Rioux! Back in high school, I was tasked with guarding a 6-foot-10 player. Although my coach had taller players available, he chose me for my aggressive defensive style. It’s clear why I ended up playing college football instead of basketball!

Have you ever pondered why God chose David to confront Goliath in 1 Samuel 17?

David was a shepherd, the youngest of Jesse’s eight sons from Bethlehem. King Saul and his men were engaged in battle against the Philistines, who had a 9-foot giant named Goliath among their ranks. Saul’s soldiers were paralyzed by fear, and no one dared to challenge Goliath.

However, David stepped forward, fueled by faith and a passion for God’s honor. He defeated Goliath with a simple stone and sling, then used the giant’s own sword to behead him. When the Philistines witnessed their champion’s defeat, they fled, leading to a great victory for the Israelites.

David’s unwavering faith empowered him to trust that the Lord would accompany him and grant him victory over Goliath. This faith was rooted in his past experiences of God’s grace and mercy, as the Lord had delivered him from perilous situations before, proving His might and reliability. David leaned on that same trust to confront the Philistine.

The staff and missionaries of Kingdom Sports would like to wish each of you a Happy New Year as your faith and trust in the Lord grows helping you face and defeat your giants.
