Encouraging Teammates
On Nov. 30, 1971, Brian’s Song, starring James Caan and Billy Dee Williams, premiered on ABC. It was the most-watched made-for-TV movie in history. It is one of the greatest sports movies made for many reasons. It’s based on Chicago Bears’ Gayle Sayer’s account of his friendship with teammate Brian Piccolo.
Piccolo and Sayers had very different temperaments. Racial backgrounds made them unlikely to become close friends in the 1960s. They became the first interracial roommates in the history of the NFL. In the beginning, Piccolo helped Sayers return from a severe injury that could easily have ended his career. Later, Sayers returned the favor by helping his friend fight a losing battle with cancer.
The most dramatic moment in the movie was Sayers’ speech when he received the George Halas Most Courageous Player Trophy after successfully recovering from his knee injury. He said, “You flatter me by giving me this award, but I tell you here and now that I accept it for Brian Piccolo. Brian Piccolo is the man of courage who should receive the award. It is mine tonight; it is Brian Piccolo’s tomorrow. I love Brian Piccolo, and I’d like all of you to love him, too. And tonight, when you hit your knees, please ask God to love him.”
Hebrews 10 – Encourage One Another
There is power in an encouraging word. Each of us can change a life with a kind word. It’s what every sports team needs, but it is also a Christian duty. The writer of Hebrews challenges his readers to encourage one another to love and do good works while consistently meeting together (10:24-25).
The author moves from an individual to a community emphasis in this chapter. The community of faith becomes stronger by the individual commitments of believers. Each of us is responsible for stirring up others toward spiritual growth. This is only possible when we assemble as a community.
The Kingdom Coach and Athlete stir others to love and good works through prayer and by setting a positive example of loving God and man. Most importantly, they encourage others with God’s Word.
Bible Memory Verse – “All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.” Hebrews 11:13 (LSB)
