WE TRAIN COACHES AND ATHLETES TO COMPETE BIBLICALLY

It’s God’s Team to Manage

Few players see the entire picture of most games. Still, managers must consider every detail before making decisions—conflict results when players make decisions that aren’t theirs. Writer Dave Boswell reported that the Baltimore Orioles’ Reggie Jackson once stole second base against manager Earl Weaver’s wishes. Because he wasn’t thinking like Weaver, a managerial genius in the 1960s, Weaver let him know it. The opponent intentionally walked powerful Lee May. The next hitter struggled against the pitcher, so Earl used a pinch hitter too early. Weaver did not appreciate any player’s attempts to manage his team!

Genesis 16-17 – God’s Perfect Timetable

Seventy-five-year-old Sarai’s faith weakened, and she sought to “manage God’s team.” Feeling the “shame” of childlessness, she suggested 86-year-old Abram have sex with her servant Hagar so the resulting child could fulfill God’s promise. Abram unwisely listened to his wife. Just as Adam had done centuries earlier. Manipulation and man’s worldly wisdom always bring trouble. Compromise complicates and brings grief.

God has a perfect timetable for what He wants to do. This was more than just another baby’s birth; it was part of God’s plan of salvation for the entire world. Sarai was impatient and unwilling to trust God by faith so He would receive the glory.

The Kingdom Coach and Athlete are willing to wait on the Lord, which shows they are walking by faith, resulting in God’s peace and joy (Romans 15:13).

Bible Memory Verse – “After these things, the word of Yahweh came to Abram in a vision, saying, ‘Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; your reward shall be very great.'” Genesis 15:1 (LSB)
