Parables of the Kingdom
One week before the California Angels’ home opener in 1976, groundskeepers discovered about 500 marijuana plants growing in the outfield of Anaheim Stadium. The weeds sprouted shortly after a rock group called “The Who” held a concert there, and 10,000 of the 55,000 fans sat in the outfield! The weeds bearing the “fruit” of their actions had to be removed!
Matthew 13 – Jesus Sowed the Good Seeds
Following His conflict with the Pharisees, in Matthew 13, Jesus gave His disciples and crowds insight into God’s kingdom and how a person enters it. Jesus used His favorite teaching method, the parable.
Jesus told his disciples to let the “weeds” of this world grow with the “good seed” until the harvest. What was He teaching? Jesus sowed good seeds (His followers) in His field (the world). One night, the enemy (Satan) sowed weeds (unbelievers in Jesus) in the same world and then concealed himself. Now, two kinds of people live side by side. We are not to try to “weed out” the unbelievers from believers. We must allow them to grow together until the harvest (end of the age). At that time, the angels (harvesters) will “pull the weeds” and burn them (in hell). The righteous (believers in Jesus) will be gathered into the Father’s “barn,” where they will shine forever like the sun coming out from behind a cloud. It is the true believers in Jesus who will inherit the earth!
The Kingdom Coach and Athlete try to reach as many people as possible with the good news of the gospel while we wait for the day of judgment.
