The Olympic torch’s significance dates back to the ancient Olympic Games in Olympia, Greece. According to a myth, the sun ignited a flame that kept burning until the closing of the Olympic Games. The light represents purity, a strive for perfection, and life. It’s not uncommon for the Olympic flame to be accidentally or deliberately extinguished during the torch relay (and on at least one occasion, the cauldron itself has gone out during the Games).

John 8 – The Light of the World

In John 8, Jesus proclaimed, “I am the light of the world” (8:12). What a statement! Jesus was claiming to be God. He is the flame that is never extinguished and always represents purity, perfection, and eternal life.

Darkness versus light is a frequent symbol throughout the Bible, with darkness symbolizing evil and light meaning good. When He called Himself “light of the world,” He claimed that all goodness begins with Him. He alone is our hope to escape the darkness. This was a symbolic way of explaining the gospel, the salvation from sin to those who believe in Him.

Jesus has plenty of light to go around. While the sun can only light half the world at a time, the Son can light it all. There’s no place on earth where His life-giving rays cannot penetrate. Jesus wanted His followers to know they would never walk in darkness without hope. One of the powerful messages in this gospel is that the spiritual light is now shining. Still, people cannot comprehend it—and they try to put it out (John 1:4–5).
