Shrugging Off Scoffers

The New Orleans Saints had just finished a great season on the field in 2018 when their coach, Sean Payton, was caught mocking the Vikings fans on camera. He made a Skol clap after the Saints took the lead with 25 seconds remaining in the game. Unfortunately, his team’s lead had just gained a field goal that wouldn’t hold up very long. Vikings quarterback Case Keenum hit Stefon Diggs for a game-winning walk-off touchdown pass.

2 Peter 3 – God Wins!

This wasn’t the first time Payton had been caught mocking fans or players. He had also made a choking gesture toward Devonta Freeman, mocking him for losing the Super Bowl. Payton’s mocking might have been somewhat harmless and meant to be fun, but in the end, it fell flat when his team was beaten in the closing moments. Likewise, in chapter 3, Peter’s reminder to the early church was despite the mockery of the scoffers (1 Peter 3:3) at the idea of Christ’s return, in the end, God wins!

Peter had warned his audience in Chapter 2 about false teachers. Now, he includes the scoffers or mockers in Chapter 3 that correspond with his repeated warnings of coming judgment. Many today continue to scoff or mock believers about the return of Christ, “Where is the promise of His coming?” The doctrine of the second coming of Christ matters despite those who would mock it. We should live every day for His glory—as if it’s our last. It doesn’t mean we don’t plan our lives as if he isn’t coming for another twenty years, but we should live expecting His return day by day by sharing the gospel with everyone we can.

The Kingdom Coach and Athlete never doubt the truth of God’s Word about the Lord’s return. They understand Christ has not returned because of His abundant mercy toward us.
