Teachable Believers
I was a boys’ basketball coach before coaching girls in high school. Quite often, I was asked by other coaches which group I preferred coaching. Anyone who has coached both boys and girls would quickly admit there is a difference between coaching the two groups.
For me, one difference was teachability. My boys often took the approach, “Been there, done that.” They were less willing to listen and learn new offenses or defenses. Even worse, they often became very stubborn when asked to move to a different position or change their shot. Most girls were more willing and open to whatever change was needed. That was my experience.
I have also found that many Christians who grew up in the church struggle with teachability. This is especially true for many Christian school students. Even those believers who might have once memorized Scripture or participated in a discipleship group will often become bored with God’s Word.
1 Corinthians 2 – Be Always Maturing!
Paul clearly states in 1 Corinthians 2 that Scripture was written as God’s revelation of His revealed mystery. It’s important not to lose sight that Scripture is not just human words but words “taught by the Spirit” (2:13). We can never completely understand or comprehend all of His Word, but we should constantly be maturing in our understanding of His Word. This is not the case for the unbeliever who rejects the Word, for it is folly to them (2:14).
The Kingdom Coach and Athlete focus on Scripture through study and meditation. Meditation is an active thought process where The Kingdom Coach and Athlete study the Word, praying over it and asking God to give them understanding by the Spirit, who has promised to lead us “into all truth” (John 16:13). This will cause spiritual growth and maturing in the things of God as His Holy Spirit teaches us.
