The Warning
The two-minute warning originated in the early years of the NFL when the official game time was kept by a member of the officiating crew, with the stadium clock being unofficial. The warning was a checkpoint guaranteeing the teams had been warned about how much time remained in the game. In the early 1960s, the AFL made the stadium clock the official game time, a change followed later in the decade by the NFL, shortly before its merger with the AFL. Television had become an important factor in the game, so the two-minute warning was kept as a commercial break and served as a “tension-building” moment, heightening anticipation and providing teams with a strategic pause.
Revelation 6 – Judgment Against Sin
Revelation 6 contains a warning that shows God’s love and grace. This chapter begins a new section of John’s vision as Jesus opens God’s scroll, revealing several stages of judgment coming for the world. These end-time prophecies are also included in Daniel’s Book and Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 24 and Mark 13.
Good coaches set clear boundaries and consequences when athletes cross them. They also warn their team before they steer off the right path. God does much of the same with His warnings about future judgments against sin. Rather than ending the world quickly, He shows mercy and opportunities for repentance even after the judgments begin. His words serve as a warning to everyone who rejects the gospel today and motivates us to witness to those who face God’s wrath.
The Kingdom Coach and Athlete believe God’s judgments are tempered by His grace and bring complete harmony as He establishes His kingdom. They use every opportunity to share His love and mercy with others while there is still time, trusting that God’s timing is perfect and His plans will bring about ultimate justice and restoration.
