WE TRAIN COACHES AND ATHLETES TO COMPETE BIBLICALLY

The Wife For Isaac

One factor in drafting a player is his signability. Every pro team recognizes talent, but if a player won’t sign a contract because he wants too much money or wants to play for another team, it’s not wise to waste a draft pick on him. When the Baltimore Colts selected John Elway in the NFL draft, he refused to sign with a poorly performing team and demanded a trade. Elway’s agent later said, “John would be a garbage collector before he would play for Baltimore.” Teams must do their homework to determine the signability before they draft!

Genesis 24 – Rebekah

Abraham faced a tough challenge as he considered the “signability” of a wife for his son in Genesis 24. To produce a great nation, Isaac must have a Godly wife! A Godly wife was not to be found among the unbelieving pagans of Canaan, and there could be no compromise in her selection. This is the longest chapter in Genesis, which tells how a man got his wife.

God’s draft pick for Isaac was Rebekah, who was raised to trust God. God orchestrated the entire event. She was a virgin willing to leave home without delay to marry Isaac. She heard the word about Isaac and believed it. She saw the proof of his greatness and wanted to belong to him for the rest of her life. She had never seen Isaac (1 Peter 1:8), but what she had heard about him convinced her to go to Canaan with the servant.

The Kingdom Coach and Athlete are like Rebekah in Genesis 24; they trust God and say, “I will go!” They are committed to telling others the good news about the marriage and the glorious wedding feast yet to come (Matthew 22:1-14).

Bible Memory Verse – “Then Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey on which I am going, and will give me food to eat and garments to wear, and I return to my father’s house in peace, then Yahweh will be my God.’” Genesis 28:20-21 (LSB)
