The Transformed Athlete
You are likely familiar with the idea of being a “transformational athlete” rather than a “transactional athlete.” Transactional athletes do things for their teammates in order to get something in return: wins for their team, personal validation, a sense of feeling successful, etc. Transformational athletes help those they play with to grow and develop as complete persons, not just as athletes. The Cambridge Dictionary gives this definition of transform: “to change completely the appearance or character of someone, especially so that the person is improved.” This is the work Jesus Christ does and continues to do in us when we surrender in faith to him. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) The Sermon on the Mount is all about how the good news of God’s reign through Christ is transforming us. As you study and apply Matthew 5-7, you will experience this transformational work of Jesus in increasing measure—leading you to continued growth as a truly transformational athlete.
