WE TRAIN COACHES AND ATHLETES TO COMPETE BIBLICALLY

Under Pressure

The best-known modern-day martyr is former missionary Jim Elliot, who attended Wheaton College and joined their wrestling team during his first year. He believed in the value of physical conditioning and discipline and wanted to prepare himself for the mission field.

In his journal entries, he often talked about how he knew that God’s will was more important than his own life. On January 8th, 1956, a group of about 10 Huaorani warriors killed Elliot and his companions. Elliot’s body was found downstream, along with the other four men.

I have often used Jim Elliot’s most famous words when speaking to groups about sacrifice and spreading the gospel.

“I seek not for a long life, but a full one, like you Lord Jesus.” — Jim Elliot

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose” — Jim Elliot

Acts 7 – God’s Grace is Sufficient

Before Jim Elliot died for his total devotion to Christ, Luke records the first instance here in chapter six with Stephen. History has many periods of persecution in which men and women have given their lives for their faith. Stephen’s sacrifice marks a turning point in the church that will be a pattern for centuries. When the gospel changes lives in a community, opposition always arises, but God’s grace is always sufficient.

Jim Elliot’s sacrifice led to his widow, Elisabeth, who, along with others, was instrumental in finally reaching the lost Ecuadorian tribe with the gospel.

The Kingdom Coach and Athlete know every believer who lives out the Great Commission can expect hardship and problems in their lives. However, God’s Spirit will give them, like Stephen and Jim Elliot, boldness and courage to stand strong for Him.

Journaling helps you understand and respond to the Bible. As you journal, use the acronym HEAR to Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond to what you have read in the reading plan.

Bible Memory Verse – So Ananias departed and entered the house. And he laid his hands on him and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord sent me—that is Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming—so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 9:17 (LSB)
