The Pacesetter

It’s been more than five decades since Madeline Manning Mims became the only American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the 800-meter race. She became a pacesetter for American women and women of color, though she didn’t realize it at the time. “When I looked at one of my older videos, I realized that I was the only black woman in the whole mix.” After her track career, she became a chaplain and counselor to several women’s teams. She spent much of her life sharing her Christian faith with others, extending her influence far beyond the track.
Judges 4 – Godly Influence
Judges 4 introduces Deborah, who also became a pacesetter for Israel. Female leadership among God’s people was uncommon during this period. Israel’s repeated disobedience had brought them under Canaanite oppression, but God once again demonstrated His mercy by raising up a deliverer. Deborah served as a judge and prophetess, guiding the people with wisdom and courage. As Lappidoth’s wife, she faithfully carried out the responsibilities God entrusted to her.
When God commanded Deborah to summon Barak to lead Israel’s army against the Canaanites, she responded with confidence in His promises. Her courage encouraged others to act in faith despite overwhelming opposition. Deborah understood that victory would come not through human strength, but through God’s power.
Deborah stands out as one of Israel’s godly leaders. Through her service, she modeled love for God, obedience to His commands, and a willingness to influence others for His glory. God is not limited by human expectations or abilities. Whether He chooses a man or woman, the strong or the weak, His power is sufficient to accomplish His purposes. Great leaders faithfully point others toward God.
The Kingdom Coach and Athlete set the pace for others through faithful obedience, courageous leadership, and dependence on God’s strength. Their example encourages others to trust God and stand firm when facing adversity.
